How to Sync Your Apple Watch to Apple Health

Your Apple Watch collects heart rate, HRV, sleep stages, blood oxygen, workouts, and dozens more health metrics every single day. All of this data should flow automatically into Apple Health — but a few settings need to be right for it to work. Which Settings Control Apple Watch Health Sync?

The Apple Watch doesn’t have a single “sync” switch. Instead, several settings across your Watch app, iPhone settings, and the watch itself all need to be enabled. Miss one, and specific data types go silent.

On your iPhone, open the Watch app:

Go to Privacy and confirm that Heart Rate, Fitness Tracking, and Environmental Sound Measurements are all toggled on. These are the master switches — if Heart Rate is off, your watch still records workouts, but no heart rate data is written to Apple Health.

On your iPhone, open Settings → General → Background App Refresh:

Make sure the master toggle is on, and that both Health and Fitness appear in the list with their toggles enabled. Without background refresh, data waits until you open the Health app manually — which can mean hours of missing metrics.

On your Apple Watch, open Settings → Health:

Enable Heart Rate, Blood Oxygen (Series 6 and later), and Track Sleep with Apple Watch. For sleep tracking, you also need a Sleep Schedule configured in the Health app on your iPhone. Without a schedule, the watch won’t record sleep stages — even if you wear it to bed.

On your iPhone, open Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Health:

Toggle on Sync this iPhone. This doesn’t affect the watch-to-phone sync directly, but it ensures your health data backs up to iCloud and stays available if you switch devices.

What Data Does Apple Watch Send to Apple Health?

What If Your Apple Watch Data Isn’t Appearing?

Check that both devices are connected. Open Control Center on your Apple Watch — a green phone icon means it’s connected to your iPhone. A red X or red phone icon means the connection dropped. Move both devices closer together and wait 30 seconds.

Restart both devices. Press and hold the side button on your watch, then tap Power Off. On your iPhone, restart from Settings → General → Shut Down. This clears temporary Bluetooth issues that can block sync.

Verify data source priority. Open Health → Browse → tap any metric (like Heart Rate) → scroll down to Data Sources & Access. Your Apple Watch should appear at the top of the priority list. If a third-party app has taken priority, drag Apple Watch back to the top.

Disable Low Power Mode on both devices. Low Power Mode reduces background activity, which can delay or block health data transfers.
